Day 1: Arrival & Tianmen Mountain, the Mountain with Heaven’s Gate

We arrived in Zhangjiajie early in the morning and headed straight for Tianmen Mountain. The world’s longest mountain cable car carried us from the city up to the mountaintop. We walked along the cliff-hanging plank road and the famous glass walkway. Standing on transparent glass, we looked down at the deep valley below. Later we visited the huge natural Tianmen Cave. In the evening we checked into our hotel in Wulingyuan and tried local Tujia food.

Day 2: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park – Yuanjiajie & Yangjiajie

Today we explored the core of the national park. We took the Bailong Elevator, the tallest outdoor elevator on earth. When we stepped out, we saw countless sandstone pillars rising from the forest, just like the floating mountains in Avatar. We wandered around Yuanjiajie, saw the First Bridge under Heaven, then hiked to Yangjiajie to view the winding Great Wall of nature. The mountain wind blew through the peaks, and the view was absolutely breathtaking.

Day 3: Golden Whip Stream & Ten-Mile Gallery

Our final day was slow and relaxing. We hiked Golden Whip Stream, a peaceful trail beside clear water. Tall peaks stand on both sides of the stream, birds singing all around. After lunch, we visited Ten-Mile Gallery. We took the little sightseeing train and enjoyed the rock formations that look like human figures and animals. Before leaving, we wandered around Xibu Old Street and picked up small local souvenirs.

Travel Postscript
Travelling in a group of three makes the tour flexible. There is quite a lot of walking in the scenic area, so save your energy. Bring rain gear as mountain weather changes quickly. If you have extra time, you can add Furong Town to your schedule, the ancient town built above a waterfall.

Personal Travel Tips

1. Zhangjiajie’s scenic spots cover a large area with plenty of walking. It is necessary to wear comfortable non-slip sports shoes to avoid fatigue.
2. Mountain weather is changeable with frequent morning mist. It is recommended to carry light coats and portable rain gear all year round.
3. Core scenic spots, cable cars and elevator tickets need real-name advance reservation. It is recommended to book in advance during peak tourist seasons.
4. Wild macaques are active in the forest area. Do not carry food in your hands or tease them to ensure travel safety.
