Day 1: Arrival & 72 Qilou Tower
We landed at Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport in the afternoon. Our guide met our group and transferred us to the hotel in Zhangjiajie downtown. We rested briefly before heading to 72 Qilou Tower. We watched the sunset over the grand Tujia-style architecture, enjoyed local snacks and rice wine. We bought simple handcrafted souvenirs and prepared for our lake and ancient town journey the next morning.
Day 2: Baofeng Lake & Huangshizhai
We entered the national park early to avoid crowds. We took the Bailong Elevator upwards to Yuanjiajie, the famous Avatar Hallelujah Mountain site. We wandered along cliffside boardwalks and gazed at thousands of vertical sandstone pillars rising from the misty valley. In the afternoon we hiked Yangjiajie. The “One Step to the Sky” narrow pass impressed our whole family. We took lots of family photos among the peaks.
Day 3: Furong Ancient Town
We drove to Furong Ancient Town early in the morning. This ancient Tujia town is built upon a massive waterfall. We wandered cobblestone lanes, visited stilt houses and the ancient water mill. We explored local Tujia folk museums to learn about minority customs. We stayed overnight in the ancient town to view the spectacular illuminated waterfall after dark.
Day 4: Mengdong River Rafting & Departure
The morning was for Mengdong River rafting. We floated along the clear river canyon surrounded by green cliffs. The water was cool and the scenery wild and beautiful. After lunch, our guide transferred us back to the airport. This trip focused on lake scenery, ancient minority villages and river adventures, a totally different side of Zhangjiajie.
