Malaysia Girls' Duo Trip | Zhangjiajie Travel Diary: Four-day Tour of the Avatar Mountains in China

Aug152025

I’m from Malaysia and flew all the way to Zhangjiajie, China, with my best friend; I’d long been captivated by the "Avatar" floating peaks and wanted to see this world-class, otherworldly landscape with my own eyes. Save an average of ¥800 per person (by avoiding overpriced scalper tickets, unnecessary optional extras, and detour-related transport costs).

Day 1: Zhangjiajie City – A "Xianxia"-style nightscape and a first taste of Western Hunan.

After landing in Zhangjiajie, everything was taken care of; the tour guide met us at the airport and transferred us to our downtown hotel to freshen up. We spent a leisurely afternoon strolling through the Tujia-style district, admiring the unique architecture of Western Hunan’s ethnic minorities while enjoying the pleasant evening breeze. At dusk, we visited the "72 Strange Towers" (Qishier Qilou); with the lights fully illuminating the stacked *diaojiaolou* (stilt houses), the atmosphere was magical—like stepping into the real-life set of a fantasy drama—and every snapshot turned into a stunning nightscape photo. It was my first time experiencing the vibrant local life and romantic charm of Zhangjiajie in such an immersive way; the experience completely surpassed my expectations.

Day 2: Tianmen Mountain Scenic Area — A Journey Through a Fairyland Suspended in the Clouds

Our guide managed to secure tickets for the highly sought-after "Route A" cable car, which takes you directly from the city center to the mountain summit; the half-hour ride across the cityscape and the moment of ascent were truly breathtaking. We visited the key highlights in turn: the Ghost Valley Cliff-Hanging Walkway, the Coiling Dragon Cliff Glass Skywalk, and the 999-step stairway leading to Tianmen Cave. Standing mid-air on the cliffside and looking down at the valley—with its swirling mists and rolling peaks—offered a deeply soothing, panoramic view from the heights. Throughout the tour, our guide shared fascinating stories about the sites and helped us find unique, photogenic spots away from the crowds.

Day 3: Wulingyuan Forest Park | The Real-Life "Avatar" Peaks

Today, I finally laid eyes on the long-awaited Hallelujah Mountains! I took the Bailong Elevator for a high-speed ascent, shooting straight up to the cloud-kissed peaks in just 90 seconds. At Yuanjiajie, every step revealed a new vista—from the Southern Sky Column (the inspiration for the "Hallelujah Mountains") and the First Bridge under Heaven to the Enchanting Terrace. Amidst the forest of unique peaks and drifting mists, the landscape felt like a secret realm suspended in mid-air. In the afternoon, I explored Tianzi Mountain; the Imperial Brush Peaks stood tall and majestic, while the West Sea Stone Forest stretched endlessly, creating a landscape of remarkable depth and layering. The route was efficient with no backtracking, and the pace was comfortably balanced—allowing for a relaxed experience without the exhaustion of a grueling hike.

Day 4: Golden Whip Stream & Ten-Mile Gallery | A Fairytale Finale

The final day is all about relaxation and leisure. Stroll through the Golden Whip Stream Grand Canyon, where the water is crystal clear and the lush forest teems with negative oxygen ions—a true natural oxygen bar. Hiking along the stream is a soothing experience; the interplay of light and shadow amidst the trees creates scenes straight out of a fairytale. In the afternoon, take the sightseeing train through the Ten-Mile Gallery to leisurely admire the panoramic vistas of towering peaks and rock formations, effortlessly taking in all the hidden gems along the way. For dinner, savor authentic Tujia "Sanxiaguo" (Three-Pot Stew)—a dish bursting with tangy, spicy flavors that are unique to the Xiangxi region.
